No Magic Bullets
Scientific breakthroughs are the most important nutrients to maintain enthusiasm and vision - prerequisites to endure hard and very often frustrating work in the laboratory. This enthusiasm is counterbalanced by a sceptical public audience and medical doctors doubtful to all the promises announced from the bench.
Sadly enough, they seem to be right in most cases.
However, some progress made seems to be burried by a general disappointment. Small progress remains unrecognized, as the improvements achieved do not seem to weigh when compared to all the expectations which had not been fullfilled.
The Newsletter ‘Therapeutics Targeting Growth Receptors and Growth Factors: Not the Magic Bullet - a Bullet Nevertheless' gives a brief overview of FDA approved targeted therapeutics addressing growth factor receptors and growth factors.
This first generation of targeted therapeutics for solid cancers shows that there is improvement and there is room for more improvement. However, these drugs are no magic bullets.
